The National Occupation Standards for Community Development Work The community development work NOS contain a number of sections which we have used in different ways. The key purpose statement is used to determine if any programme put forward is eligible for endorsement by a community development work body. The values and practice principles (these can be found in the application packs for endorsement) inform the processes we have set up – hence our developmental and learning from each other approach, and we are looking to see that they inform the way that a programme has been devised. For example how is the publicity designed and the programme advertised, how do they inform the selection and recruitment of staff, and do course participants have time to reflect on their learning and to share with others. The more obvious application is the use of the ‘what people need to know’ sections to inform the content of any teaching and the ‘what people need to be able to do’ sections to inform the practice side of any learning. Within this we check that the right level has been used – as our current NOS are based on levels relating to job roles rather than to levels used within higher education for example.
